On Saturday, January 13, thousands gathered to celebrate the 26th Annual Empowerment Congress at USC. This year’s theme was “Empowering California: A Local Perspective”, where six California Gubernatorial candidates participated in a town hall moderated by Marc Brown of ABC7 and Mary Plummer of KPCC. Hosted by Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, in partnership with KPCC, ABC 7, the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, and USC University Relations, was the first major gubernatorial Town Hall.
The town hall was no doubt heated, but informative for the voters who have a huge decision to make this year. In participation were Travis Allen, John Chiang, John Cox, Delaine Eastin, Gavin Newsom, and Antonio Villaraigosa. Topics included many of the major issues plaguing California today, such as homelessness, immigration, education and much more. Following the town hall, was a post-debate discussion hosted by the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics, giving attendees an opportunity to debrief and share their thoughts on what they heard. In addition, in usual Empowerment Congress fashion, a celebration followed the town hall with live entertainment for all. USC is a proud partner of this annual event and look forward to hosting many more for years to come.
